General industry charge

From 1 April 2003 the ongoing general activity costs carried out by the UK authorities in operating the regulatory framework will be met by an annual charge, called the ‘General Industry Charge’ (GIC).

The GIC was introduced by the Biocidal Products (Amendment) Regulations 2003 (SI 2003/429), which came into force on 1 April 2003. The amendment lays down detailed rules specifying who must pay the charge and how the amount is to be calculated.

HSE has prepared information on the GIC in the form of a Question and Answer section [65kb] PDF fIle

If you consider your company is liable to pay the GIC you have a legal duty to inform HSE. You may wish to do this by completing a General Industry Charge Registration form (GIC01).
