Health and safety in the concrete industry

The UK precast concrete industry produces over 35 Million tonnes of products annually for the construction sector, worth an estimated £28 billion, which is roughly equivalent to the turnover of the cement and ready mix concrete industries.

The main causes of injury are:

  • Injured while handling, lifting or carrying
  • Slipped, tripped or fell on the same level
  • Hit by moving, flying or falling object

The main causes of occupational ill health are:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)
  • Skin disease, e.g. Dermatitis
  • Respiratory disease, e.g. Occupational Asthma
