This section outlines the principles that govern disclosure of information to the public. It is not concerned with disclosure of information to a defendant within the course of criminal proceedings, for example advance information or disclosure of unused material under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.
You should apply these principles to each situation, including requests for information, on a case-by-case basis. If you require further advice concerning legal restrictions on disclosure, you should contact Legal Adviser’s Office. If your query concerns the application of the Codes of Practice on ‘Access to Government Information’, you should contact your Directorate / Division nominated open government inspector (NOGI) or other local disclosure contact point.
