This page contains advice on where to go if you have any enquiries on health and safety in the road haulage and distribution industry.

For general enquiries on health and safety in the road haulage and distribution industry your first contact should be to HSE's national helpline HSE Infoline. If you have a local site-specific issue you can contact your local HSE Office and ask to speak to an inspector, or to the local authority if your premises are normally inspected by them.

Operational Inspectors

Road distribution and warehousing premises are inspected by operational inspectors from either HSE or from local authorities. HSE inspect the road distribution industry. Local Authorities usually inspect warehouses. Inspectors’ duties include:

• Carrying out inspections
• Investigating accidents and complaints
• Providing advice at visits, by phone, or by letter
• Taking formal enforcement action where necessary

HSE's Transportation Sector

The Transportation team operates within CACTUS division (Commercial and Consumer Services, Transportation and Utilities Sector), which deals with all service industries.

Our activities include:

• Providing support, advice and guidance to HSE and Local Authority operational inspectors
• Working with the key stakeholders, including trade associations and trade unions
• Working with road haulage and distribution industry stakeholders via the Road Distribution Action Group
• Focusing effort to drive down accidents and ill health in the industry to meet the Government’s Revitalising Health and Safety (RHS) targets
• Monitoring the health and safety performance of the industry
