Policy Group

The Policy Group is responsible for securing improvements of sickness absence levels across the public sector.

Organisations within the public sector remit include the National Health Service and subsidiary care organisations, independent healthcare, local government, Fire, Police, Defence, and Education services in England, Scotland and Wales.

There are over 5 million public sector workers in total across Great Britain, representing about 18 of the workforce.

Sickness absence is a significant operational and financial burden across the public sector and in particular the civil service, with estimated costs of nearly £306 million:

• 9.8 average working days sickness absence per staff year (increase from 9.2 in 2001)
• 4.3% working days lost amount to 4,903,705 days sickness absence
