Paper Industry - Programme of work
PABIAC Strategy
In 2008 PABIAC launched its strategic direction statement ‘Making a Difference 2008 – 2011’
The statement:
- Pledges support for all partners in the paper industries to help them deliver reductions in ill health and injuries
- Recognises the need to build on past achievements, to consolidate these, and embed health and safety culture within individual businesses
- Reaffirms the commitment of the industry to the principles set out in the Government’s Strategy for Workplace Health and Safety in Great Britain to 2010 and beyond
Strategic targets
"Making a Difference 2008 - 2011" includes strategic health and safety targets for the paper sector as a whole (papermaking, corrugated packaging and recovered paper), to achieve by 2011.
Strategic Objectives 2008 – 2011
- The industry aims to reduce its overall non fatal reportable injury incidence rate to 850 per 100,000 employees or better.
- Over the period 2008 to 2011 employers should demonstrate a continuously improving health and safety management tool using a suitable benchmarking tool (e.g. The Corporate Health and Safety Performance Index {CHASPI} for large employers or the PABIAC Safety Management Systems Self Assessment Tool for SME’s)
- Over the period 2008 to 2011 employers should demonstrate a continuously improving health and safety climate when benchmarked using a suitable tool (e.g. The PABIAC Safety Opinions Survey)
- In 2008 employers will provide PABIAC with the information needed to allow PABIAC to:
- establish what is good practice in occupational health management in the industry
- set improvement targets for occupation health management for 2009 – 2011 and beyond
- Share good practice on occupational health management.
How the strategy will be implemented
The PABIAC partners are helping the principal trade associations to prepare specific health and safety objectives relevant to the three industry sectors - papermaking, corrugated packaging and recovered paper - the achievement of which will contribute to the overall strategic targets.
The partners will work together on projects and initiatives designed to help achieve the health and safety objectives set for each sector of the industry.
Tools to help stakeholders achieve the strategic objectives
PABIAC has prepared some tools to help employers assess their safety management systems and gauge the health and safety climate within their businesses.
Further initiatives and projects will be developed to help the three industry sectors to achieve their objectives.
Individual employers are also expected to prepare and implement their own health and safety improvement plans relevant to their particular circumstances.
