HSE’s Manufacturing Sector works with those involved in:

• the manufacture of general rubber goods
• the manufacture of new tyres
• tyre retreading
• importing tyres
• wholesale distribution and retailing of tyres
• tyre recovery

We also work closely with the trades unions and trade associations representing these industries.

In 2004 HSE launched the 3 year enforcement campaign 'Safe Interventions' initiative. It was aimed at checking employers in the manufacturing sector had proper systems, procedures and safeguards, including robust isolation and lock off systems.  Ensuring the safety of employees involved in cleaning, clearing blockages and making adjustments at dangerous machines. In 2007/2008 the campaign was extended to include Entry into Confined Spaces.  

HSE Inspectors will visit companies in the rubber sector as part of the project using the questionnaires:-  'Safe Interventions - Enforcement Initiative - Machinery Safety' and 'Safe Interventions - Enforcement Initiative - Entry into Confined Spaces'
