Ministry of defence (MOD) and the armed forces

The MOD is probably the largest single employer in the country (the health services employ more, but are made up of many employers). It employs some 300,000 people working in Defence: 190,000 in the Armed Forces, over 80,000 civilian MOD staff, as well as 23,000 servicemen and women currently training and those civilians who are employed locally at the many Defence establishments across the country and abroad.
