Stress-related and psychological disorders
Occupation and Industry
Information on the occupational and industrial distribution of new cases of work-related mental illness reported to THOR is shown in Table THORP04 and Table THORP05. The most recent LFS information by occupation and industry relates to 2007/08. Annual data for the prevalence of self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety data by occupation is shown in Table STROCC2 and for incidence by occupation in Table STROCC4. Data for the average of the latest three years, allowing more detailed occupational breakdowns, is shown in Tables STROCC2_3YR (prevalence) and STROCC4_3YR (incidence). Similar tables are available by industry: annual data in Tables STRIND2 (prevalence) and STRIND4 (incidence), and for the average of the latest three years in Tables STRIND2_3YR (prevalence) and STRIND4_3YR (incidence). Estimated days lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety by occupation and industry are shown in tables STROCC6 and STRIND6 respectively.
Recent self-reported illness data from the LFS for people working in the last 12 months shows occupation groups carrying higher than average prevalence rates included: teaching and research professionals, in particular teachers; protective service occupation; health and social welfare associate professionals, in particular housing and welfare officers and nurses; corporate managers and business and public service associate professionals (Table STROCC2_3YR).
The industries carrying the higher than average prevalence rates of work-related stress, depression or anxiety, as indicated by recent LFS data, are public administration and defence, education, health and social work and financial intermediation. This is largely consistent with results from previous years.
Surveillance scheme data indicates a similar occupational and industrial distribution of new cases of work-related mental ill-health, highest incidence groups tend to include occupations within the medical industry, financial services and security services, as shown in Tables THORP04,THORP05 and THORP06.
