In the last few years the rate of reported major injuries to employees fell in manufacturing, although the rate in 2007/08p (180.8 per 100 000 employees) was similar to that for the previous year.
Within manufacturing the industry group recycling has a rate of reported major injury in 2007/08p of 886.7 per 100 000 employees. This was nearly five times the rate for manufacturing as a whole, and over eight times the rate for all industries in 2007/08.
Relative to other industries, a higher proportion of reported injuries in manufacturing as a whole were caused by contact with moving machinery and contact with harmful substances.
Self-reported and THOR-GP data indicates the rate of work-related ill health was of a similar order in manufacturing as across all industries, in the most recent data.
THOR surveillance scheme data, 2005-2007, indicates the incidence rate of dermatitis, asthma and asbestos related diseases was higher in manufacturing than all industries.
