The number of major injuries fell by 18% between 1997/98 (116) and 2001/02
(95) but then rose by 17% to 111 in 2002/03.
The rate of major injuries has risen overall across the seven-year period
by 65% between its lowest point in 1996/97 (270.8) and its highest point
in 2002/03 (445.8).
Being struck by a moving/falling object makes up the majority of major
injuries. They fluctuated throughout the period and accounted for 28% of
all major injuries in 2002/03.
The number of major injuries involving slips and trips on the same level
has fluctuated. It rose between 1998/99 (9) and 2001/02 (24) but decreased
to 19 in 2002/03.
Although major injuries involving falls from a height have fluctuated,
it has decreased by 75% from its highest point in 1997/98 (20) to its lowest
in 2002/03 (5).
Major injuries involving handling have tripled between 2001/02 (8) and
2002/03 (24).
